Sucre is often referred to as “the white city” because of its ivory-colored Colonial buildings. In fact, its old town has been described as the best preserved example of a Spanish colonial city on the continent by UNESCO, who also named it a world heritage site. You can learn a lot about the city’s history in the various museums, as well as by enjoying the architecture.

Set in a valley and surrounded by mountains, Sucre is undeniably picturesque but is much more than just an attractive city. Although La Paz is where the government resides, Sucre is Bolivia’s constitutional capital. It is also an important university town, with large numbers of young people coming to study here. In addition, there is a strong indigenous influence, with many traditional Quechua-speaking communities living in the neighboring mountains and bringing their famous woven textiles to be sold in markets in Sucre and the nearby town of Tarabuco.
