Preparing for the DELE exam

Courses specially designed to prepare you for the DELE examination are available in our partner schools across Spain and Latin America. In some schools you can sit the exam at the end of your course or, alternatively, you can choose to take the exam once you get home.

Why take the DELE exam?

If you pass the exam, you will receive a DELE language diploma (Diploma del Español como Lengua Extranjera), which is recognised around the world as certifying your level of Spanish. The exams are developed and evaluated by the University of Salamanca and are administered by the Cervantes Institute. Certificates are issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. The DELE certificate is well-known internationally, so it's particularly important if you would like to work or study in a Spanish-speaking country or if you would like to have your Spanish skills officially recognised.

The DELE Exam

To pass one of the six DELE exams (Acceso, Plataforma, Umbral, Avanzado, Dominio Operativo Eficaz and Maestría), you will need to prepare in a focused and intensive way. The examinations take place a number of times a year (normally April, May, July, October and November) and can be sat all over the world on the same dates. Students normally need to register for an exam one month beforehand.

  DELE 'Acceso' level

The first DELE exam is equal to A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At this stage you should be able to use basic structures and vocabulary to have a very simple conversation.

  DELE 'Plataforma' level

At this stage students can understand and talk about more specific topics on a simple level. They can, for example, formulate and understand sentences about personal information, interests and work.

  DELE 'Umbral' level

This level attests to the student's understanding of the grammatical principles required to understand simple written and spoken sentences. The 'Umbral' level is equivalent to B1 on the CEFR framework.

  DELE 'Avanzado' level

At 'Avanzado' level, students have a good general understanding of the Spanish required for everyday life. It is equal to B2 on the CEFR framework.

  DELE 'Dominio Operativo Eficaz' level

Students at this stage are competent Spanish linguists with an advanced range of vocabulary and a high level of understanding. They can converse easily in a variety of different situations.

  DELE 'Maestría' level

The highest DELE level is equal to C2 of the CEFR framework. It is proof of a deep knowledge about the language and an ability to communicate fluently without problems.
